Keynote Address by Mitch Joel: Algorithm - The Future of Brands
We live in a culture of change. Most brands are overwhelmed by the massive shifts they have to make to their business models. Disruption is everywhere. Digital transformation is imperative. We live in the Uber-ization of everything. There are several new (and dramatic) realities that will force businesses to rethink many of their commonly held beliefs about what works in business today, and what the future may look like. Interestingly, this is less about the evolution of technology and much more about how consumers have become that much more efficient in this very different landscape. Algorhythm is your compass.

Corporate Intimacy: A Challenge to Brand Storytellers

How do you create meaningful, emotionally engaging content that moves your audience to action? The secret, according to expert storyteller Jordan Bower, is intimacy.

In this highly interactive discussion, Jordan will show you how Silicon Valley start-ups are integrating intimacy into their design process to improve their collaboration and creativity. Using research from anthropologists and Hollywood directors, he'll help you understand how intimacy within your creative team leads to deeper engagement with your audience. The Digital Cleanse
After 25 years on the Internet, Angela Crocker realized she (and most others with digital DNA) have an unwieldy amount of data. Photographs, social accounts, blog posts and old university essays fill hard drives and the cloud.  Few individuals, and even fewer businesses, truly know what information they have available nor where to find it.  Based on Angela’s two year journey to embark on a digital cleanse, session attendees will learn strategies to declutter their data, organize their information, sort out accessibility and make a plan to keep their digital “paper tiger” under control.  It’s time for us all to take charge of our digital lifestyles.

How can we avoid these? Who's behind them? What do we do when we are attacked? How should this change how we use social media? What are the best practices for sharing content and avoid potential threats (or the illusion of potential threats).

This panel will examine all this, and take your questions.

#RoadToRyerson: Earning Attention With A Proper Social Campaign
Social Media is but a communication tool we use to do what we’ve been doing for centuries: tell stories. In a world with more distractions than there's ever been, we are fighting hard to make people listen to those stories and capitalize on the economy of attention. My experience has planted me firmly in marketing for the 18-24 demographic; an age with multiple competing priorities. Through the award-winning #RoadToRyerson campaign as a case study, I will demonstrate step-by-step how to create a social media campaign that goes beyond the quantifiable and into the impact you can have. By meeting people where they are, you will effectively earn that attention.

Recognizing that non-profits have limited resources, time and staff to devote to social media strategy, this session will focus on working with what you do have and making it work twice as hard for you.  This “brains-on” discussion will cover the essential tips, tricks and pitfalls of social media for NFPs who want to build a community on a (possibly invisible) budget.

Our panelists bring a well-rounded, grassroots approach to social media. Amy Dove from Power To Be brings insight into bridging the gap between your organization’s marketing plan and social media, ensuring messages are consistent and tailored to platform and audience. Marci Zoretich, BC Association of Clinical Counsellors, is a social media “gardener” well-versed in building and maintaining online communities and weaving them into non-profit communication strategy. Panel moderator Carol-Lynne Michaels is a board member for the Victoria Film Professionals Association, MediaNet Society, and the Victoria Multicultural Society.

Online Public Consultation: Making It Real

Online Public Consultation: Making it Real

There is a crisis in public consultation. People don't trust the process anymore. They cannot see that their feedback has any affect on the outcome of decisions or policies. How can we address this crisis?

Internet technology offers fresh potential to invigorate civic engagement and build trust. However, although there have been plenty of opportunities for public commentary, these have been of limited value. Public dialogue has been anonymous and subject to trolls, sock-puppets and astro-turfing. Petitions, surveys and email forms go into black holes.  Until consultation is tied to actual observable outcomes, the people and government will not take it seriously. Online consultation needs to generate authentic and defensible data. In other words, we need to make online public consultation 'real' and actionable.

Organizations that seek public input for either legislative or business reasons need new tools for engagement. Civic engagement tools are an ever-expanding suite of software tools and platforms that are being used to modernize resident engagement, leveraging geospatial and 3rd Platform technologies, including social networking tools, mobile apps, data analytics, and cloud computing. A variety of solutions are geared toward open data and crowdsourcing initiatives to collect aggregated resident feedback as well as to foster participation. Others focus on generating actionable reporting and dashboards to bolster civic consultation, and yet others focus on creating information and feedback loops with residents, local businesses and community groups, and other interested stakeholders. The newer capabilities are enabled by cloud, catalyzed by mobile, disseminated by social networks, and informed by Big Data.

Public or Private - How you might be breaking the law every day.
At Echosec, we deal with vast amounts of social media data every day, all of it generated by people. You might be surprised to know how cautious BC and Canadian privacy legislation can be when it comes to this public information, plus many other forms of data including customer records, marketing information, and even email contact lists!

This talk geared towards anyone who works with data about people, especially when those individuals are Canadian. During this talk, you will learn what data is actually defined as personal, how you are required to store and manage that data, and some best practices for ensuring that you do not violate privacy regulations! If the acronyms 'PIPA', 'PIPEDA', or 'CAN-SPAM' mean nothing to you, you might want to hear this talk!

Sell Your Story on Snapchat
Snapchat is now rivalling Facebook for views per day, racking up 8 billion eyeballs on Snapchat's native video content. And no, Snapchat isn't just for kids anymore, brands are using the tool to meet their consumers where they are most active. Because of the ephemeral nature and the in the moment storytelling experience, Snapchat builds a level of trust that other platforms have a difficult time achieving, with 58% of college students saying they’d likely purchase a product from a brand that sent them a coupon on Snapchat. In my presentation, I'd show the audience how to use the native features of Snapchat to their advantage, case studies of brands who are using it well and different sales methods to use to boost revenue.

Marketing the Unmarketable: The PineApple Case Study
In late March, Nathan Newman of Time Over Distance in Manchester, UK, knew he had a problem, an opportunity, a challenge, and a mystery all wrapped up in one spiky package. Living legend and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak's new project PineApple was going to be unveiled soon, and he wanted as much buzz as possible around the launch. Newman asked Lorraine Murphy of raincoaster media to handle the social media campaign in North America, and she signed on and got tweeting.

There was just one hitch: they were not allowed to tell anyone what they were talking about. And the Woz wouldn't mention it.

How do you market an intangible? How do you drum up interest in the unnameable? How do you market a mystery? Using statistics and a variety of social media tools and strategies, Lorraine will unpack the marketing of PineApple, up to and including the grand reveal April 21 at Manchester's Business Rocks conference.

Creativity, Social Media, and teaching the next generation…

When we hear Social Media and teenagers in the same sentence, it usually focuses on the negative; cyber-bullying, sexting, etc.  This is of course happening, and we need to protect kids as there is some really bad stuff out there.

However, there is also an incredibly positive side out there too that does not seem to be mentioned as much.  As a teacher at the Pacific School of Innovation and Inquiry, I have personally seen the power of social media be used for good.  We have built businesses, guest blogged, supported organizations, and much more.  We have been using it as a tool to harness our creativity and connect the community.  And really, isn’t that what it is all about?

Join me, Jake West, to explore the imaginative aspects of social media, teenagers, and how we can promote entrepreneurship in our schools.
